What's the scoop?
Bacterial vaginosis, also known as BV, is a vaginal infection that occurs from a change in the vagina's pH. This happens when there are changes in types of healthy bacteria that live in the vagina.
Who's more at risk?
There are a few risk factors that increase the chance of getting BV such as being sexually active, however it is not classified as an STD.
Other things that can make someone more likely to be diagnosed with BV include
- having an STD
- smoking cigarettes
- douching
The infection is very common, and a woman can still get it even if she doesn't have any of the risk factors.
Diagnosis & Treatment
BV can be detected by vaginal discharge coupled with a "fishy" odor, however between 50 - 75% of women with BV are asymptomatic (don't have any symptoms).
BV can be treated with antibiotics in an oral tablet, gel or cream form. It is important to see a medical professional, because if left untreated, it can cause complications during pregnancy and make you more successible to contracting STDs.
